Why I am here as Soen 2/3

After graduating from college and working in the publishing industry, a major turning point for me came when I learned about the problems and facts of nuclear power plants.I immediately appealed to the magazine I was involved with to do an article on it, but they found it difficult to do so due to advertising and political interests.


It wasn't long after that that I quit my position at the company.
I wanted to be in a condition where I could write what I really wanted to say without any constraints[but now, I now know that whether I support it or not, I am also a part of a huge social structure].

Also, It was around that time that I became interested in Portland, a city that had developed harmoniously rather than competitively with its natural environment, small business, economic development, and unique sustainability.
I wanted to live in this city and learn about the lifestyle and sense of community in order to improve my English when I travel abroad.
In 2011, I put all my work on hold and came to Portland.

My English wasn't perfect then, and it still isn't now, but little by little I started to report on Portland life, small businesses, and the development of the city for Japanese media based on sustainability.

Surprisingly, what I found was that Japan and Portland have a lot in common: preferring old things, tradition, respecting the small over the large, and creating a cycle.

And then (due to a combination of many other factors too), I turned my arrow back to the Japanese culture where I was born and raised.
It was at that moment that I realized that the ideal of diversity that I had been searching for outwardly was only possible because of the foundation of the days in the rural town that had shaped me.

大学卒業後、出版業界で働いていた私にとっての大きな転機は原子力発電所が抱える問題とその事実について知った時でした。すぐに関わっていた雑誌で記事にしたいと訴えましたが、広告や利権の都合上、それは難しいと判断されました。

会社に身を置くのをやめたのはその後すぐでした。
本当に伝えたいことをしがらみなく書ける状況、自分が信じるものの周りで、できることで関わっていたいと思うようになりました。

自然環境とスモールビジネスと経済発展と、独自のサステイナビリティに則って競争より調和的発展を遂げたポートランドという地方都市に興味を持ったのも、ちょうどその頃でした。

海外に旅をしても私の全く通じない英語を向上するためにもこの街で暮らしながら、暮らしやコミュニティ意識を学びたいと思うようになりました。

そして2011年、全ての仕事を一時停止させ、ポートランドへとやって来たのです。

当時も、今も英語はまだまだ完璧ではありませんが、少しつずつポートランドの暮らしやスモールビジネス、街の発展などサステイナビリティをベースに、日本のメディアにリポートするようになり、意外にも、見えてきたのは日本とポートランドの共通点＝古いもの、伝統、大より小を重んじながら、循環をクリエイトする、でした。

そして、（これ以外にも様々な要素が絡み合ってですが）私は自分が生まれ育った日本の文化に矢印が向いたのです。

ずっとずっと外へと向いてきた関心がくるりと踵を返し、自分を形成してきたファウンデーション=根本へと向いた瞬間でした。
