To have a variety of choices. To be able to appreciate them and to be able to choose freely.
Through my days in Portland, I have come to realize that this is the richness of life for me.
Now hope that by conveying Japanese culture through Soen, I would like to add to your diverse choices of actions and thoughts, and further expand the depth of your richness of life and mind.
What I mean by Japanese culture is
・Thoughts and playfulness emanating from the margins.
・The organic influence of euphemistically acknowledging each other's differences.
・The wisdom to keep the mind, body and soul in relative balance.
・The beauty and reverence that resides in the invisible and intangible, and the respect for the messages that come from them.
The reason why I wanted to do Kakigori in the U.S. is because I wanted to share the symbolism of food, which always has a correlation with nature behind it, a culture that was originally born from ice naturally frozen by water flowing from the mountains.
It is also because of these backgrounds that I tell the meaning of the 24 solar terms in each season (which have been around for 2,600 years since ancient times) and the stories of an Japanese bike-adventurer who travel while serving free coffee.
Soon, I'll share a bit of wisdom about Japanese home cooking, an interview "Why Japanese Architects Started a Zero-waste Bulk Store”,and a personal memoir
” From September 11 attacks to BLM, 20 years of a Japanese woman with ties to Georgia”.
Soen is still in the process of slow transition run by one Japanese woman,Saki but thanks to all of you who support me, I am making progress little by little.
To my family and friends who support me emotionally and physically, and to those of you who read this through a screen, thank you so much for everything!

多様な選択肢を持つこと。それらに気づき、感謝し、自由に選択できること。
それが私にとっての人生の豊かさなのだと、ポートランドでの日々を通して実感しています。
Soenを通して日本の文化を伝えることで、皆さんの日常に行動や思考の多様な選択肢の一つに加わったら、豊かさの深みをさらに広げられたら、と思っています。
私が思う、日本の文化とは
余白から発せられる思考と遊び心。
お互いの違いを認め合うことで生まれる有機的な影響。
心と体と魂を相対的にバランスよく保つ知恵。
目に見えないものや無形のものに宿る美しさと畏敬の念、そしてそこから生まれるメッセージへの敬意。

私がアメリカでかき氷をやろうと思った理由の一つに、山から流れる水が自然に凍ってできた氷から生まれた文化であること。その背景には常に自然との相関関係がある「食」の象徴性を伝えたいと思ったからです。
そんな背景があるからこそ、季節ごとの二十四節気の意味や、自由を追求しながら市井の人々の生の声を伝える自転車冒険家の生き様を始め、ストーリーを大事にしているのです。
今後は、日本の家庭料理の知恵、インタビュー「日本の建築家はなぜ廃棄物ゼロのバルクストアを始めたのか」、そして9.11からBLMまで「ジョージア州に縁のある日本人女性の20年の回顧録」も掲載予定です。
何分、子育ての傍ら、一人でやっておりましてゆっくりとした移行の過程にあるSoenですが、応援してくださっている皆様のおかげで少しずつ前進しています。
心身を支えてくれている家族や友人、スクリーン越しの方々、いつも本当にありがとうございます！
